L'assistance électrique d'un vélo pliant électrique fonctionne grâce à 5 composants principaux : le moteur, la batterie, le capteur de pédalage, la console et le contrôleur.
Ces éléments interagissent entre eux pour accompagner le cycliste dans ses efforts. En effet, ils n’engendrent pas une propulsion, mais plutôt une assistance.
La mise en marche du moteur
Dès que le système de l'assistance électrique est mis sous tension, la console s’allume à l'inverse du moteur qui reste éteint. Sa mise en marche ne se fait que lorsque le cycliste se met à pédaler.
Situé au niveau du pédalier, le capteur de pédalage est stimulé lorsque le cycliste actionne la pédale. Il transmet alors un signal électrique au contrôleur qui ouvre les vannes entre le moteur et la batterie. Le moteur du vélo se met donc en marche.
L'ajustement de la puissance du moteur
La puissance du moteur est ajustée grâce au niveau d'assistance indiquée par la console et à la lecture du signal transmis par le capteur de pédalage.
Selon le niveau d'assistance choisi, le cycliste peut contrôler la vitesse de coupure du moteur, et ce, entre des vitesses allant de 15 à 25 km/h. Ceci lui permet de continuer à faire du vélo.
Il suffit, pour cela, qu'il sélectionne une vitesse de coupure de l’assistance légèrement en dessous de sa vitesse de confort. Cette dernière est la vitesse à laquelle il est en mesure de rouler sur une grande distance sans vent de face sur du plat, tout en utilisant une énergie équivalente à celle d’un marcheur.
En choisissant un niveau d'assurance adapté, le cycliste peut également contrôler la puissance délivrée au moteur qui pourra alors atteindre des vitesses allant jusqu’à 25 km/h.

Très pratique en ville, le vélo pliable électrique présente de nombreux avantages. Il est doté d'un poids léger et offre une mobilité parfaite. Toutefois, l'un de ses avantages les plus notables reste le fait qu’il peut être plié puis transporté facilement.
Les VAEs pliables se rangent suivant un système de pliage bien défini. Il est à préciser toutefois que la technologie de pliage utilisée diffère selon le type de modèle choisi. Ainsi, nous avons :
